Orlando

“I’m sick to death of this particular self. I want another.”

  • Vita Sackville-West’s son called Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando "the longest and most charming love letter in literature." When venturing into the world of Sarah Ruhl's adaptation, this statement was my compass, reminding me to look for the love, the celebration, and the humor in every line of this show. I'm eternally grateful to this cast for adventuring with me. Woolf wrote Orlando for her lover Sackville-West in 1928. While their relationship would be codified into an influential novel, it was socially frowned upon – and would be downright illegal until 1967. In the present moment, hard fought LGBTQ+ rights around the world are disintegrating. Here in the US, transgender rights are under extreme attack from our government. After the show, I urge you to look at the dramaturgical display in the lobby to see ways to get involved.

From December to March of 2025, I directed Sarah Ruhl’s Orlando, adapted from Virginia Woolf’s novel of the same name. Through this timely piece, I explored what gender, love, and community mean in a story spanning from Elizabethan England to the present moment.
